NEWS RELEASE

Thursday 3rd April 2008

Franchise extension for First ScotRail

TRANSform Scotland [1] today welcomed the Scottish Government's decision to extend the ScotRail franchise. [2]

Colin Howden, Director of TRANSform Scotland said:

"The Government appears to have struck a reasonable deal with First ScotRail.

"The announcement provides a welcome focus upon improving and expanding the existing range of services. It's also welcome that all parts of the country appear to be getting something out of the deal.

"The community fund for stations is certainly welcome. Scotland has a wealth of unused station buildings that could be usefully brought back into productive use. This would also improve the passenger experience at these stations.

"We look forward seeing the full details. For example, it'll be interesting to find out what is being proposed in terms of future fare levels. We'll also be interested to see whether government investment in passenger services will rise or fall over the next few years, as the recent Scottish Budget did not deliver substantial increases in this area."
