IT'S SCOTLAND'S OIL (DEPLETION):
Peak Oil and transport
TRANSform Scotland [1] has today (Monday 30th
April 2007) published its paper, 'Peak
Oil and transport', [2] outlining the impact that the emerging oil
crisis will have on Scotland's transport system. The organisation also
calls on politicians of all parties to take action in preparing for a
post-oil Scotland.
Colin Howden, Director of TRANSform Scotland said:
"The only mention that oil has received in this election campaign
has been how it would fund the SNP's spending plans in an independent
Scotland. It's disappointing that no attention has been paid to the more
fundamental issue of oil depletion.
"UK North Sea oil and gas production has been in decline since 1999,
and recent reports have suggested that production is expected to be even
lower than expected over the next few years.
"We are now approaching a critical point when global oil production
will start to irrevocably decline, with oil demand already close to outstripping
supply. Politicians of all parties need to take action to prepare for
a post-oil Scotland.
"Fortunately, Scotland has phenomenal potential for renewable energy
and sustainable transport - but we must get over our reliance on oil-dependent
cars and lorries. This doesn't mean 'doom and gloom' - in fact less motoring
means less emissions, less congestion, less air pollution and a more sustainable
economy."
Oil Depletion is one of the issues covered in TRANSform Scotland's
animation, 'Holyrood's Inconvenient Truth'. To view, click on link below:
