Edinburgh trams: Welcome for Parliament tram report

TRANSform Scotland today welcomed the Parliament's tram committee report, accepting in full the Tram Line 1 loop. [1] [2] TRANSform Scotland gave evidence in support of the Bill in Parliament. [3]

Colin Howden, Director of TRANSform Scotland, said:

"This is a very welcome report. If Edinburgh is to retain a high quality of life and not be suffocated by congestion and pollution, it is imperative that the city delivers the high-quality public transport service that a new tram network will provide.

"It is especially welcome that the Committee gives strong support to the early delivery of the tram route from Haymarket to Granton, and bring rail services back to the Roseburn Railway Corridor. [4] Without the early delivery of trams to the Waterfront, the sustainability of development in that area of the city remains in doubt.

"Pressure should now be put upon the Scottish Executive to come up with the funds to pay for this part of the scheme. The Executive seems to have no problem finding new cash for environmentally-destructive road schemes, it's about time they did the same for sustainable transport schemes such as this."

[4] Roseburn Railway Corridor

The railway through Roseburn / Murrayfield opened in 1861 and closed finally (when freight traffic was withdrawn) in 1967, so for 106 out of the last 145 years it has been an operational rail corridor, and for much of the period since 1967 it has still been a transport corridor.
