Borders rail announcement: "welcome if long overdue"

TRANSform Scotland today welcomed the Scottish Executive's announcement that it plans to fund the majority of the costs of the Borders railway. [1]

Colin Howden, TRANSform Scotland Campaign Manager, said:

"Nicol Stephen's announcement is a welcome, if long overdue, boost for sustainable transport investment. Until today, the Scottish Executive has chosen to prioritise spending on unsustainable projects across the rest of Scotland.

"While it’s great news that the funding is now available, the big question is whether the train will be successful in persuading motorists to leave their cars behind. The current plans for a 61 minute train journey for the 35 miles from Tweedbank to Edinburgh just doesn’t look fast enough. The Borders needs an express service making very few stops, instead of the planned service calling at all seven intermediate stations."
