NEWS RELEASE

Monday 18th October 2004

Congestion charge result welcomed:
Scottish Executive & Alastair Darling should stop sitting on the fence

Commenting on today's positive public inquiry report into the proposed Edinburgh congestion charge, Colin Howden, TRANSform Scotland Campaign Manager, said:

"This is a very welcome and independent endorsement of the need to for congestion charging in Edinburgh. The Inquiry Reporters have clearly seen through all the self-interested special pleading from motoring organisations and the more short-sighted of Edinburgh's business groups.

"There is no hope of solving Edinburgh's transport problems unless traffic restraint measures such as congestion charging are implemented. The political opponents of the congestion charge have failed to present any credible alternative strategy for tackling Edinburgh's traffic problems and the Inquiry Reporters have clearly acknowledged this."

TRANSform Scotland are now calling on the Scottish Executive and the UK Transport Secretary Alistair Darling to publicly back Edinburgh's plans:

"It's about time that the Scottish Executive stopped sitting on the fence over congestion charging. If the Executive is to meet its target of stabilising road traffic levels, Scottish transport minister Nicol Stephen and UK transport secretary Alistair Darling, himself an Edinburgh MP, should be publicly promoting congestion charging for Edinburgh."
