Slow Down! A conference to explore the issues of speed, and to examine the case for slower speeds

On Wednesday 26th May 1999, TRANSform Scotland, The Slower Speeds Initiative and West Lothian Council are jointly hosting the Slow Down! conference at the County Buildings, Linlithgow, West Lothian. The conference, the first major transport conference following the Scottish elections, will establish how Scotland can set out a programme for tackling speeding.

The conference will feature speakers from all the areas central to the debate: local authorities, motorists, the police, psychologists, community groups, national environmental transport lobbies and government. Please see the enclosed conference brochure for details.

The conference falls during the Government's Speed Policy Review, set up following last summer's Transport White Papers, and while Local Authorities are in the thick of producing their 'Local Transport Strategies', a crucial element of which is how they can encourage people to walk and cycle rather than driving by making roads safer for these vulnerable users.

The conference will feature the Scottish launch of The Slower Speeds Initiative, with a speech from Don Mathew, its Chair. A copy of The Slower Speeds Initiative's leaflet 'Why reduce traffic speeds?' is also enclosed.

David Jarman, Head of Strategic Planning and Transportation at West Lothian Council, will speak on the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland's (SCOTS) radical plans for tackling speed. [A copy of this is available on request.]

Colin Howden, Campaign Manager of TRANSform Scotland, said:
"One of the fundamental transport challenges - in both urban and rural situations - is to transform the use of our street space. Streets made inhospitable by speeding motorists, noise and polluted air must be reclaimed for public use; residential areas must be reclaimed for the people who live in them. This is a local issue that affects all of us!"
